Here are some tips to help you get acquainted with the city.
What to do in Molde;
The city is located right by the fjord, surrounded by majestic mountains and forests. There are plenty of hiking opportunities, whether you prefer a leisurely stroll in Moldemarka, challenge yourself with mountain hikes like Romsdalseggen, or explore the many beautiful islands in the area.
The Moldemarka area offers a variety of hiking trails, including the Stikk UT routes, Storlihytta, and Tusenårsvarden. These trails offer stunning views and a great opportunity to get out into nature. Enjoying freshly baked waffles at Storlihytta on a Sunday sounds like a great idea 🧇
If you want to take a dip in the sea, Kringstadbukta is a popular and idyllic beach with a sandy shore. It is within walking distance from the University College. You can also check out the Retiro bathing spot east of the city center, which has a diving tower and exercise equipment. Moldebadet water park offers student discounts (every monday and friday), and why not also visit Molde’s floating sauna, Nausta, located by the seafront in the city center.
During winter, you can enjoy fantastic skiing conditions for both cross-country and downhill skiing. Tusten ski lifts are known for being one of Norway’s best freeride facilities and offers Norway’s most beautiful view: the Molde panorama with 222 mountain peaks!
“Plassen” is a cultural center in the heart of Molde. Here you can find a theater, library, and Cafe Kurt. Quizzes and other events are organized here throughout the year. If you are interested in theater, the regional theater “Teatret Vårt” offers many exciting performances, and they also have student prices!
The library offers a weekly language café and has a good collaboration with the Bjørnson Festival, a literary festival held every year in September.
If you prefer going to the cinema, Molde kino offers delicious popcorn, snacks, and a great movie experience. Check out the program.
Molde Jazz Festival is the world’s oldest jazz festival, held every year in week 29. This is a must-see! During the festival week, the city is filled with people and great atmosphere. Even though the festival focuses on jazz music, they also feature large Norwegian and international artists from other music genres. Why not work as a volunteer at the festival? It’s social, a lot of fun, and you get amazing music experiences!
KRONA-Romsdalsmuseet is one of Norway’s largest open-air museums showcasing local history and culture. The museum is located near the University College. The museum also has an open-air museum with old buildings that you can visit. At Café Mali, you can buy delicious baked goods, cakes, desserts, and lunch, among other things.
Molde Football Club is an important part of the city’s identity with strong local support and engagement. Molde FK offers free tickets to students and discounted tickets. You can keep up with student events here.
Bjørnsonhuset is a cultural center located on the way from the University College to the city center. The cultural center offers regular concerts and shows throughout the year. The opening ceremony for students is also held here.
There are several restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in the city.
One of them is the artisan bakery “Fole Godt”. In Romsdal, we use the phrase “Fole Godt” to express that something is very good! The bakery offers delicious pastries and bread, and they have their own lunch menu.
There are several restaurants located by the seafront and in the city center. Some examples are Kompis, Rød, Glass, Egon, Køl Bar and Grill, and Smile. If you like Indian food, Tandoori Guru – Taste of India comes recommended.
“Den Gode Smak” (The Good Taste) has one of Molde’s best coffees, and they also have a rich selection of tea. Here, you can enjoy your coffee with a good lunch and at the same time enjoy a great view of Molde’s panorama.
The canteen at the University College is open every weekday and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also have an exciting à la carte menu. Read more about the canteen’s offerings.
If you want to relax at home and crave something delicious, you can order food through the apps Wolt or Foodora and get the food delivered to your door.
Molde has several popular places for nighttime!
Smuget is the Student Society’s own bar, located in the premises of the canteen at University College. They host a quiz every Wednesday, which is very popular. Smuget also arranges themed parties.
Brygga, located by the seafront, is a popular spot among students. Every other week they host a fun karaoke night, where many students “throw themselves on the microphone”!
The venue “Rød Bare Blå” offers live music as well as a nightclub with a DJ. If you have a student ID, you get free cover before 11 pm and 50% off shuffleboard rental Sunday through Thursday.
Club Infinity has an 18-year age limit on Fridays.
At GlassTaket, you get the feeling of sitting at a beach club abroad or being in one of the big cities, but with the view over the Moldefjord. Here, you can play on a 12-hole mini golf course, among other things. It is open during the summer months.
Fuzzy Platebar hosts both a weekly music quiz and music bingo, and they also have regular concerts.
Bus 701 goes to and from the city center from the University College. There are bus stops right below the University College and at the student residences on the Campus. A smart tip is to download the FRAM app, where you can plan your trip, see departure times, and buy tickets for public transportation in Møre og Romsdal.
The Student Society (iStudent) has good agreements with Molde Taxi, and if you purchase an oblat card, you can get discounted prices here, among other benefits. The card can be ordered and purchased at the bookstore at the school.
