Opening week is over. What now?

Now the “real” student life begins!

For some, the openingweek has been filled with new friends and plenty of activities. Others may be left feeling like they have not quite found their place yet.

If you relate to the latter, you are far from alone. Many students need time to find friends, establish routines, and feel a sense of belonging during their studies. The good news is that Orientation Week does not determine how the rest of the academic year will turn out!

Here are some tips for getting to know others and finding your place in the student community.

No matter how your start to the academic year has been, do not think that you are the only one feeling this way. Even though it may seem like everyone else has already found their group of friends, there are often more people than you realize who are also looking to make new connections. Opening week is only the beginning, and many friendships develop later in the semester.

It is easy to scroll on your phone to pass the time or when you feel nervous, but try putting it away. Smile at the people you meet and show an interest in getting to know those around you. A question about your studies or a comment about a lecture may be all it takes to start a conversation.

In our activity calendar, you will find events taking place throughout the semester. Student life is about more than lectures, and activities provide great opportunities to meet new people in a relaxed and informal setting.

Explore the accosiations and committees available through the Student Society at Molde University College. There are plenty to choose from! Taking on a role in a student organization can provide valuable work experience, but it is just as valuable for expanding your network and meeting new people.

Strong relationships are not built in a single week. Students have different life circumstances, interests, and schedules. Be patient with yourself and with the process. A sense of belonging often develops gradually over time.

If you would like to talk more about these feelings, or simply need someone to think out loud with, you can book an appointment with a Student counsellor. We are bound by confidentiality, and the service is completely free of charge.

Good luck with the semester! 🍀
